I’m standing on a platform in Grand Central Station, waiting for the №7 train to Queens after a long day at work. After almost four years of living in New York City, I’ve found that reading usually redeems all the terrible, terrible time you have to spend on the Subway. For the last two months I’ve been reading IT by Stephen King. If you’ve ever picked up a copy, you know the physical book isn’t conducive to subway reading. It’s bulky, and coming in at over 1,200 pages, the thing weighs about three pounds.
At this point I’m too deep to stop. The book is too good to stop. Also, as a writer, it’s a lesson for me in fearless creativity and commitment to finishing something no matter how huge or intimidating the project. I tell you all of this to let you know how absorbed I am, how in I am. How I’ve been carrying a three-pound book around New York City for the last two months, straining my shoulders and forearms to hold it up in front of my face like an awkward praying mantis because I want to.
