Tech venture capitalist and former Facebook executive Chamath Palihapitiya told CNBC on Wednesday that data privacy regulations will lead to a sea change in internet companies' business models and how they are valued in the stock market.

"If I had to forecast the next four or five years, we have European regulations around data privacy. Other countries will copy it," Palihapitiya said on "Squawk Box." "[That] will restrict many companies, internet companies, from gathering data, period."
