On Saturday, just after 9 a.m. PT, Facebook's head of security Alex Stamos sent out a series of tweets in which he criticized The New York Times and Guardian stories about a scandal involving a University of Cambridge lecturer, an analytics firm called Cambridge Analytica, and data on more than 50 million Facebook user accounts that were reportedly accessed without their consent.

His problem was that the whole episode was being described as a "breach" and "one of the largest data leaks in the social network's history." But the data in question was obtained under Facebook's rules, when Aleksandr Kogan, the lecturer at Cambridge, created an app that asked people for access to their account information, their likes, their location and their friend's information. In return, those people could use his app, which ostensibly offered personality predictions to users while calling itself a research tool for psychologists.
