Before being succeeded by Coffee Lake back in October, Kaby Lake was the extremely successful follow-up to Intel’s Skylake CPUs. Kaby Lake processors were behind a great deal of the best mainstream PCs and laptops of 2017, including the 2017 Dell XPS 13 and the MacBook Pro. For all intents and purposes, Kaby Lake knocked it out of the park.  

However, for fans of Moore’s Law, it was also an extremely confusing and frustrating generation – for even the best processors. This is due to the fact that Intel went against their traditional ‘tick-tock’ model, where they would shrink processor tech every other year, and released the 7th and 8th generation Kaby Lake CPUs as the third and fourth iterations of Intel’s 14nm process respectively.
