Christian Smalls only got two hours of sleep the night before the vote count began, but he was on track to pull off one of the biggest upset victories in the history of the American labor movement, and was cracking jokes.
Smalls, the president of the Amazon Labor Union, had just stepped out of the National Labor Relation Board’s regional office in downtown Brooklyn. Only a few hours into the ballot count, the union was leading Amazon by 738-to-600 votes.
