The Case Against the iPhone

Yesterday, Apple announced the iPhone X it’s new high-end status symbol iPhone. At this point in the news cycle there are thousands of articles and recap videos explaining what makes the new iPhone (maybe) amazing and why there will be a subset of customers who will clamor to spend four figures on it. The 10th anniversary of the iPhone is a good time not to look at the latest iteration but to question the role of the smartphone, the category Apple blew up and re-invented in our lives.
I was a total early adopter and then I adopted some yearly iteration of the iPhone ever since. A combination of clumsiness, well timed cell phone contracts, and a capacity to spend money stupidly have landed a new iPhone in my pocket every 1–2 years without fail. Each iteration did amazing things, particularly in the leaps and bounds Apple has been able to make in the realm of the camera. Maybe I should be even clearer for the Apple fanboys out there, I firmly believe that Apple continues to make the best smartphone on the market, it’s hard to argue otherwise. My issue isn’t with the iPhone's quality or even with all of the ways Apple wrings extra money from it’s users — iCloud, Apple Music, Applecare, etc. My issue is that the iPhone in its own heart warming way, is ruining our lives.
