Forest fires have apparently ravaged over four million acres of land across the United States so far this year, and the problem is only getting worse with global warming. Enter technology's hottest solution: Machine learning.

Scientists and engineers from the University of California, Irvine (UCI), have built a decision tree algorithm to predict how big a forest fire will grow given the time of day, weather conditions, and local vegetation. By forecasting the disaster, the researchers hope that it will help states decide how best to allocate resources to fight the blazes.
