Stocks edged lower on Wall Street in afternoon trading Wednesday, giving back some of the market's gains a day after the S&P 500 hit a record high.
Energy stocks led the modest slide as crude oil prices fell after a three-day rally. Communications companies also helped pull the market lower, offsetting gains in technology and real estate stocks. Bond prices were rising as traders took a more defensive approach.
