The Oxford University-led National Consortium of Intelligent Medical Imaging (NCIMI) has partnered with US conglomerate GE Healthcare to work on algorithms that will help predict which coronavirus patients will go on to develop severe respiratory illness – a key cause of death among patients – and be affected by long-term lung problems after recovery.

At present, it’s difficult for clinicians to predict which patients will go on to require more advanced care such as ventilators. If this kind of information was available, they would be able to fast-track the neediest patients for more intensive care.
