The missile – thought to be a Hwasong-12 intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) – was fired from North Korea at 5:58 am Japan time. It travelled 2700 kilometres and reached a maximum altitude of 550 kilometres, before splashing into the sea about 1000 kilometres east of Hokkaido island in northern Japan at 6:12 am.
This is the first time that North Korea has launched a ballistic missile over Japan. On 28 July, the country tested its longer-range Hwasong-14 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), but fired it almost vertically into the sky – to a height of about 3700 kilometres – so it didn’t reach Japan.
