Tuesday evening seemed quieter across the US, more than a week after a black Minneapolis man named George Floyd died at the hands of a police officer. Police departments credited emergency curfews, which have been imposed in at least 11 cities since Saturday to quell sporadic violence and looting.

Tuesday saw “big improvements from previous days,” Los Angeles County sheriff Alex Villanueva said Wednesday, after the county shut down at 6 pm the night before. New York City Police Department chief Terence Monahan said the city’s 8 pm curfew—its first since World War II—”really helped our cops take out of the neighborhoods people that didn’t belong there.” In Washington, DC, Tuesday’s curfew began at 7 pm.
