Google and Apple are working on coronavirus contact-tracing technology that will be made available to governments around the world to help track the spread of coronavirus. However, industry analysts estimate that up to two billion of the world’s phones won’t be able to run the decentralised, Bluetooth-powered system the two companies are developing.
A report by the Financial Times estimates that many poorer and older people – groups which have both been found to be more susceptible to serious Covid-19 infections – will be among those unable to run the technology.
