But Qualcomm's being cagey. Chances are high that Samsung will use a Qualcomm chip, likely Snapdragon 855, within its first foldable phone. Samsung officially showed off the device on Nov. 7 at its conference for developers. Samsung's foldable phone is rumored to be called the Galaxy X or Galaxy F, and is expected to launch early next year. Samsung will likely save most of the official details for a grand unveiling along the lines of the Galaxy S9 or Note 9, showing off a short video, and a prototype momentarily held up in an executive's hand.

Although Samsung never displayed the foldable phone up close -- not even behind museum glass -- the device is plenty real. It's conceptualized enough to earn Google's backing. In fact, Samsung's project seems to have spurred official Android support for all foldable phones, no matter the manufacturer. Meanwhile, Samsung shared a few more details, such as the phone's 4.5- and 7.3-inch screen sizes.
