Electric scooter-sharing company Lime announced today that it’s launching a new safety campaign called Respect the Ride, which will see the company invest $3 million to educate riders on safe scooter practices, distribute helmets, and better maintain its bikes and scooters. The announcement comes just days after the company recalled some of its Segway Ninebot scooters in Los Angeles, San Diego, and Lake Tahoe due to manufacturing defects that could result in battery explosions.

Lime is asking its riders to take the Respect the Ride pledge, and it will be distributing helmets to the first 25,000 people who sign it. In a blog post published today, the company says it will be distributing more than 250,000 free helmets to riders globally over the next six months.
