Future Samsung Smartphones Might Have a Fingerprint Scanner That Fills the Entire Display

Back in April, Samsung applied for a patent titled ‘Method for acquiring biometric information and electronic device supporting the same’ at the USPTO and the WIPO. It detailed the workings of an optical in-display fingerprint scanner. Unlike ultrasonic sensors, which allow the whole screen to be used a fingerprint scanner; only a small part of the display can be used with optical in-screen fingerprint sensors. That’s why Samsung has apparently come up with a new solution, according to its latest patent.
The patent described an advanced FOD (Fingerprint-On-Display) scanner which will enable the use of the whole display for fingerprint authentication. This makes the process of fingerprint scanning much more convenient. The patent shows two smartphone designs; one reminiscent of the Galaxy devices and the other featuring a notch. However, Samsung is unlikely to come with a notched handset and it is apparently even trying to embed cameras beneath smartphone displays to kill the notch trend for good.
