With the rollout of 5G networks planned for next year, a lot of manufacturers such as Lenovo and Huawei have claimed that they will be the first one to release a 5G-ready smartphone. In the midst of their claims, OPPO might end up beating them to the task as the company has successfully completed the first 5G tests on a modified retail unit of the R15 which was announced earlier this year.
The modified version of the OPPO R15 was fitted with the Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G modem, which can deliver speeds of up to 5Gbps. The test was carried on 3GPP Release 15 NSA standard with the 10MHz bandwidth of 4G LTE Band 5 and 20MHz bandwidth of 5G NR n78 band. OPPO said that the test results will be leveraged to launch a commercial 5G smartphone in 2019. OPPO is the first Chinese Android phone manufacturer to successfully complete 5G signalling and data links testing on a mobile phone.
