Toshiba will be introducing their first SSD using 96-layer 3D NAND, the drive using this NAND is the Toshiba XG6 which is an update to their XG5 NVMe SSDs for OEMs, the XG5 was never released to the general public, but we hope this drive will be.
The Toshiba XG6 is still using the Toshiba TC58NCP090GSD which is exact same controller as the XG5, meaning the improvements are due to the new 96-layer NAND flash along with some firmware optimizations. The new 96-layer 3D TLC supports Toggle NAND 3.0 interface speeds at around 667-800MT/s which when compared to the 400-533MT/s speeds used by earlier 3D NAND from Toshiba is quite the upgrade, this allows data to be moved between the controller and the NAND more quickly unfortunately though, Toshiba didn’t disclose the exact speed used on the XG6.
