Somerset County’s Hazmat team swung into action a few months ago when employees at a courthouse in Maryland came across a suspicious substance. Because they are equipped with a state-of-the-art machine that detects potentially deadly powders, they were the people who were called in to test it. Luckily the substance was found to be not dangerous at all.

Joel Landis, the Somerset County Emergency Management Director, said technology has changed the way they do business in the area, including in the region he oversees.
