RCS (Rich Communication Service) is the next step in SMS evolution and Google’s only hope of competing with iMessage (we all know how Allo worked out, don’t we?). It addresses all the inherent flaws with SMS and brings it up to standard with some features we take for granted in popular instant messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Telegram. However, the implementation of RCS standards is still left to carriers, who have been slowly getting on board the RCS train. Currently, only Sprint supports it via Android Messages. T-Mobile promised to support it earlier in the year and today, it looks like they delivered. The CTO of T-Mobile Tweeted:
GSMA Universal Profile 1.0 sw updates have started rolling out, extending @TMobile’s long history of RCS leadership, bringing up to 100MB transfers and 100-person group chats natively. Starting w/ Galaxy S7/S7 Edge devices & more to come over time!
