Uber said Wednesday that the number of requests for data on its riders from government officials in the United States and Canada rose sharply last year due, in part, to a “rising interest” in information on the ride-hailing company’s users.
In its latest transparency report, Uber said the number of requests from U.S. regulators climbed to 3,825 demands covering 21,913 user accounts in 2018, up from 2,940 demands from 17,181 user accounts in 2017. Uber said that in 2018, it turned over data in 72% of the requests. In Canada, Uber said authorities made 161 data requests on 593 user accounts last year.
