No. 2 Serra at Folsom (1-0), Friday, 7 p.m.: Northern California’s top two teams at the end of last season meet in a matchup that will help dictate which school from this region will play in the Open Division state championship game. Serra lost to Mater Dei-Santa Ana in the Open game in 2021. One division below the Open, Folsom fell to Cathedral Catholic-San Diego after beating De La Salle in a regional. Folsom opened its season last week with a 47-18 rout of Monterey Trail-Elk Grove. Austin Mack, a 6-6, 215-pound junior, threw for 342 yards and five TDs to lead Folsom in his first game as the program’s new starting QB. Notre Dame-bound Rico Flores Jr. caught seven passes for 156 yards and two TDs, picking up from where he left off for Folsom last year. Folsom suffered a big loss in its opener when Stanford-bound tight end Walker Lyons suffered a season-ending broken leg. Serra counters with a roster filled with talent, including DB/RB Joseph Bey, LBs Jabari Mann and Danny Niu, TE/DE Seamus Gilmartin and lineman Ryan Silver. Longtime Serra coach Patrick Walsh clearly isn’t backing into this season. Next week, the Padres visit De La Salle. — Darren Sabedra
Central Catholic-Modesto (1-0) at No. 3 St. Francis, Friday, 7 p.m.: Central Catholic erupted in the second half in its opener last week, turning a 14-14 halftime score into a 41-19 victory at Merced. The Raiders were supposed to play St. Francis last season in Modesto, but the game was called off because of poor air quality caused by wildfire smoke. The teams will finally meet Friday. St. Francis fell just short of capturing the CCS Division I title last season. The Lancers graduated several key players from last year’s 11-1 team, including RB Viliami Teu, the Bay Area News Group’s player of the year. But St. Francis, like other powerhouses, reloads more often than it rebuilds. QB Matthew Dougherty and WR Andrew Adkison are among the Lancers to watch. –– Darren Sabedra
