The search for the Bay Area’s cheapest gas is on once again, with daily price drops replacing head-spinning hikes as drivers can now readily snag sub-$5 gas for the first time in months – if they’re willing to hunt for it.

California’s gas prices have dropped $1 since their peak in mid-June, bringing the statewide average to $5.42 a gallon, according to AAA. But Bay Area stations selling fuel below $5 are increasingly common, including at Costco, Berkeley’s Smog & Gas, and at multiple locations along San Jose’s famously cheap strip of stations on McKee Road.
