SAN JOSE — For 13 years, more than a dozen San Jose State University female swimmers waited for this day. Scattered around the country, some of them watched on Zoom on Tuesday as the athletic trainer they accused of sexually assaulting them during sports massages appeared in a federal courtroom to face criminal charges connected to claims that university officials first excused and then ignored for more than a decade.

But trainer Scott Shaw didn’t appear in person in the San Jose courtroom on Tuesday. Instead, he too called in on Zoom — from Austin, Texas, in the middle of an RV trip with his significant other to Boston to attend college hockey’s championship known as the Frozen Four.
