Many Bay Area Uber passengers have already encountered sticker shock as they hail a ride home from a bar or travel to the airport. But starting Wednesday, riders will be paying a bit more as the company rolls out a temporary gasoline surcharge.
The 45-to-55 cents tacked on to Uber each trip will go entirely to drivers who are struggling to fill the hole in their take-home pay left by the meteoric rise in gasoline prices, which now average over $5.80 in most of the Bay Area. The company is also adding a 35-to-45-cent charge to food delivery orders through Uber Eats.
