Hundreds of people in the agricultural community of Pajaro in north Monterey County were forced to flee their homes when the Pajaro River levee broke Friday as a powerful atmospheric river bore down on the region, prompting authorities to call in the California National Guard to help rescue stranded residents from floodwaters.

The breach happened at around midnight upstream from Pajaro after evacuation orders were issued for the area, county officials said.
