Not so long ago, the bone-dry soils around the Bay Area were the major concern of weather and safety officials. An atmospheric river storm, some intermittent rain, and now a second atmospheric river storm on an express route through the region have put that worry to rest for now.

In its place: Concern about ground that’s turning into a pile of mud, and an unforgiving weather pattern that’s causing it to become saturated so quickly.
