Former Palo Alto police chief Robert “Bob” Jonsen is all but certain to be the first new Santa Clara County sheriff of the millennium, after a nail-biter of a vote that saw his healthy election-night lead nearly shrink to a single point. But with only a few thousand votes left following the new totals posted Friday evening, that lead looks solid after 11 days of ballot counting.

Since Election Day voting ended, Jonsen has steadily led retired sheriff’s captain Kevin Jensen, who ran for the office in 2014 and had strong institutional and law-enforcement support as well as a massive fundraising advantage.
