SAN FRANCISCO — Paul Pelosi’s bid to foil a middle-of-the-night intruder lording over his bed with zip ties and a hammer began with a simple request: Can I use the bathroom?

It was that question that set in motion a high-wire act that allowed Pelosi to call 911 and alert authorities about the armed man inside his house. All the while, the intruder demanded to see Pelosi’s wife, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, in an apparent bid to target high-level politicians and “take them all out,” according to court records.
