SAN JOSE — A judge has ruled that the civil corruption trial for Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith will continue after Smith suddenly resigned Monday and asked the court to dismiss the case now that she can’t be kicked out of office.

The dismissal motion was presented to San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Nancy Fineman on Monday afternoon, a few hours after Smith submitted a one-sentence resignation letter to the Board of Supervisors.
