SAN JOSE — A short witness list, probing an accusation that Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith obstructed a civilian auditor’s probe into a jail-injury scandal, capped the testimony in Smith’s civil corruption trial and set the stage for closing arguments and jury deliberations that will determine if she serves out the final weeks of her term.
On Friday, Smith’s attorney, Allen Ruby, called attorney Paula Canny as his main witness. Canny represented the families of Michael Tyree, who was notoriously killed by three correctional deputies in the Main Jail in 2015, and Andrew Hogan, a mentally ill man who severely injured himself in a jail-transport van in 2018, and whose handling by the sheriff’s office and county led to a record $10 million settlement.
