SAN JOSE — Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith asked an underling to buy cheap tickets to a San Jose Sharks game in an effort to cover up her use of a donor’s luxury suite and bypass legal requirements to report the high-priced gift to a state watchdog agency, a county employee who worked for the sheriff testified Friday.

The testimony from Lara McCabe, which capped another week in Smith’s ongoing civil corruption trial, was the first public account of the sheriff’s purchase of cheaper seats to a 2019 Sharks game expressly so that Smith, then-Undersheriff Rick Sung and Capt. James Jensen wouldn’t have to report the suite tickets to the state’s Fair Political Practices Commission.
