Santa Clara County has set aside $2.4 million to settle a class-action lawsuit filed on behalf of people held in jail long after prosecutors decided not to charge them — sometimes for several days — during a two-year window that coincided with the rise of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The monetary agreement was reached at the end of the summer, and notices have been going out to the settlement class: 244 people who between April 26, 2018 and April 26, 2021 were kept in custody for more than 12 hours after the district attorney’s office made its no-charge decision.
