The first hints of direly needed rain began falling over portions of the Bay Area and Northern California early Sunday, acting as a salve to the drought-stricken region and potentially offering a temporary reprieve from dangerously risky fire conditions across the area.

Initial rainfall totals during the early hours of the storm appeared to be smaller than expected for much of the Bay Area, though the rain should pick up throughout the day, according to the National Weather Service. The highest amounts of rain appeared concentrated across the North Bay on Sunday morning, with much of the rest of the region receiving just a dash of precipitation.
