MOUNTAIN VIEW — As the Bay Area’s high prices continue to put pressure on the region’s poorest, Mountain View is setting up a new guaranteed basic income pilot program promising to give $500 to 166 low-income families for two years, no questions asked.

Applications for the city’s new guaranteed basic income pilot program officially launches Friday and runs through midnight on Sept. 25. Elevate MV program is set to aid 166 extremely low-income Mountain View families with at least one child or who are currently pregnant by giving them direct cash payments of $500 a month for 24 months, or about $6,000 in total through the course of the program.
