In the wee hours of the night on Monday and with roughly a dozen onlookers, construction crews donned their hard hats and reflective vests to remove the controversial Thomas Fallon statue in downtown San Jose.
After years of efforts to remove the Fallon artwork — seen as a symbol of American imperialism by the South Bay’s Mexican and Indigenous communities — a crane plucked the 16-foot-tall, 12,000-pound bronze statue off its concrete base and placed it into a storage crate. The city will hold on to the statue for now. There are currently no plans to fill the now-empty spot at the traffic median on St. James Street, though some in the Indigenous community have called for there to be a statue that is more inclusive for the city.
