A last-minute bid to save some form of San Jose’s historic Flea Market has been endorsed by an influential city commission — despite impassioned objections from vendors who said the replacement market would be too small for all of them and logistically unattainable for many.
The San Jose Planning Commission voted 5-1 Wednesday night to recommend approval of a revised development plan for the 61.5-acre site currently home to the 61-year-old San Jose Flea Market. The commission’s decision paves the way for a new high-density neighborhood of offices, shops and apartment buildings adjacent to the city’s Berryessa BART station. Commissioner Jorge Garcia dissented and Commissioner Mariel Caballero was absent.
