SAN JOSE — A big residential development could sprout in north San Jose about a block from a light rail station, a project that could add hundreds of housing units to the area, city plans show.

The project would consist of a seven-story apartment complex and an adjacent cluster of townhomes on North Capitol Avenue near the interchange of Interstate 680 and Berryessa Road, according to a proposal being reviewed by San Jose planners.
