And just like that, on Wednesday the race to become mayor of San Jose was suddenly on.

First, San Jose Councilman Raul Peralez announced he is launching his campaign to succeed Mayor Sam Liccardo, who terms out next year. Then only a few hours later, his council colleague Dev Davis confirmed that she, too, would be running for the city’s top spot.
