SAN JOSE — The new chief of the San Jose Police Department looked to close the book on an acrimonious selection process marked by late-breaking bias allegations, with city and community leaders literally standing behind him as they voiced support for his appointment.
Anthony Mata held his first news conference Wednesday as the incoming chief — he officially starts Monday — a day after his unanimous confirmation by the City Council, timed in part to address a week’s worth of media coverage that surfaced, or re-surfaced, controversies from his 25-year career with SJPD.
