US intelligence and law enforcement agencies investigating the massive hacking campaign on US government agencies and private sector companies said Tuesday that the attack “likely originated in Russia,” issuing a joint statement that clearly acknowledges Moscow’s suspected link to the intrusion.

The statement said the evidence that has been gathered so far indicates “an Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) actor, likely Russian in origin, is responsible for most or all of the recently discovered, ongoing cyber compromises of both government and non-governmental networks.”
