For nearly two decades, a 16-foot-tall bronze statue depicting a former San Jose mayor and captain in the Mexican-American War raising an American flag on city land and claiming it from Mexico has greeted residents and visitors as they entered downtown by way of St. James Street.

But by August 2022, the concrete slab that the 12,000-pound statue currently sits atop will be wiped clean, absent any remnants of the controversial monument that once stood there.
