In the first week of September, top California fire officials warned the public that dry, windy weather was expected to make this year’s brutal fire season last all the way through December.
But after a late October atmospheric river and a smattering of smaller storms dropped a deluge of rain across Northern California, experts say that fire danger has dramatically decreased across most of the state — prompting fire officials to shift resources toward vegetation management and take comfort that weather patterns are deviating, at least for now, from the extreme conditions predicted earlier in the season.
