One week after the Fawn Fire began tearing through the remote forestland and communities that surround Shasta Lake, evacuees were allowed back into their homes as the blaze reached 90% containment and firefighters mopped up its final hotspots.
A combination of lighter winds earlier this week and a fast-growing pool of firefighters helped to get the blaze under control just seven days after it broke out, said Cal Fire Shasta-Trinity Unit spokesperson Cheryl Buliavac. In that time, the fire grew to 8,578 acres, destroyed 185 structures, damaged 26 more and injured three people.
