Outside Stanley Middle School in Lafayette on Thursday, a folded piece of cardboard hung below a sign pointing to a crosswalk. On it were hundreds of messages to a crossing guard killed by an SUV on his second day on the job. Below, someone had placed flowers, with a homemade red paper heart.

All were tributes to Ashley Dias, 45, who died Wednesday while helping students cross the street, pushing kids out of the way of the oncoming vehicle that struck him. Residents and witnesses said the 45-year-old crossing guard — who attended the same school as a child — saved a girl from being hit by the car.
