Less than a week after the Caldor Fire pushed into the Lake Tahoe basin, a dramatic shift in weather conditions allowed crews to rapidly gain containment of the Northern California fire that has threatened thousands of homes and forced mass evacuations in two states.
Firefighters have taken advantage of rising humidity levels and cooling temperatures over the past few days, pushing containment of the blaze to 37% as of Saturday morning — up from 32% the night before — and even prompting some 6,000 residents on the fire’s western flank near Omo Ranch to return home.
