On a day of “extreme fire behavior,” the French Fire grew by more than 20% in 12 hours and forced the closure of Highway 155 west of Isabella Lake.

Tuesday evening’s report from the Kern County Fire Department put the fire’s size at 19,502 acres (30 square miles), with containment at 19%. That was up 3,500 acres from the morning.
