With the Caldor Fire creeping closer to the Lake Tahoe basin, fire officials said Friday they still believed they could stop it from overtaking the beloved recreational destination even as tourists were warned to steer clear of the region and thousands prepared to flee.

The 143,951-acre fire burning in El Dorado County charred a few more thousand acres overnight Thursday along Highway 50, the main road leading up to South Lake Tahoe. Stubbornly low humidity levels — combined with thick patches of unburned vegetation — allowed treetops to burn with abandon and wind gusts to spit embers pell-mell into the forest.
