A wildfire that started around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Stanislaus River Canyon in Calaveras County grew to 1,000 acres in barely two hours and forced evacuations near the city of Vallecito.

The Airola Fire broke out near the Parrotts Ferry Bridge, over the middle fork of the Stanislaus as it enters New Melones Reservoir.
