SAN JOSE — On the day scores of Californians are receiving recall ballots in their mailboxes, Gov. Gavin Newsom stopped by a campaign phone bank at a San Jose labor hall Monday and asked a volunteer if she was getting much traction.

“Everyone we’re calling is voting no” on the recall, the upbeat volunteer said, meaning they oppose the effort to make Newsom the second governor in California to be removed from office.
