PLACERVILLE – A layer of smoke is slowing the spread of the Caldor Fire in El Dorado County, but the favorable conditions aren’t expected to extend into the weekend, authorities said.

As of Thursday evening, the four-day-old wildfire covered 68,630 acres and was 0 percent contained, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. At least 104 structures have been destroyed and nearly 7,000 remain threatened.
